The Garden by appointment, Garden Tour Groups Welcome

a garden to visit

Highgate Garden & Bed and Breakfast has been developed over the last 10yrs from a bare paddock into a beautiful garden of variety and interest. The growth has been such that we are now pruning trees with a chainsaw - fantastic!

Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Highgate garden is not a manicured, statuesque, picture perfect garden but a more natural wooded and relaxed garden with a sunken garden, where we sit and watch the goldfish swim round the water lilly, various annual & perennial beds, a herb garden and rose beds plus much more. Of course it is picture perfect and interesting - what am I thinking?

It is now officially Spring 2012 and the rain keeps on coming!! Along with the rain and very warm weather comes great growth - especially weeds which seem to get to 12foot high overnight. The asparagus likes it so must not grumble too much.

The lilies are are just starting to poke up from the ground, some iris are in bloom early and the daffodils are lovely but early; there are lots of different daffodils and I just hope that my show daffs will last through to the North Island National Show mid September. Camellias are still blooming and the rhodo's are doing their thing. Another week and I will have to wear sunglasses to cope with a riot of colour !!

Unfortunately the rain has been accompanied by strong winds at times and some of the trees have succumbed and are now ready for their second and last life - the woodburner!!

Visitors spend from 1 hour to 4 hours ( if having a picnic) wandering around the garden. The garden is located 1.7km from the village of Pirongia, a district that is home to many arts and crafts people, outdoor pursuits and, of course, a variety of cafe's and a very good artisan outlet.

Call or email to make arrangements for a visit. I just love to show off our garden to garden groups or tour groups at any time even if the plants in the wrong place are 12' tall at the moment !!

Our garden is also available for small weddings, anniversaries and special photography. There are facilities to hire (rugby club rooms & Memorial Hall) in Pirongia Village for those `special' gatherings and Pirongia Clydsdales can trot groups up to the garden by arrangement - a lovely day out.

There is off road parking for cars and the smaller buses/coaches and paddock parking for the larger coaches providing the ground is not wet!

Admission to Highgate Garden is $5.00 per person

Located at 167 Bird Road, Pirongia, just a short drive from Hamilton and close to Pirongia Village where there are several cafe's for a nice lunch.
